The place is West Africa. In the background note the Kakata Highway. It runs easterly up to Gbarnga, further inland to Sanniguellie and other little known towns on the lost continent of Africa. The country on the east is the Ivory Coast. To the north is Guinea. To the northwest, Sierra Leone. These are her three West African neighbors, each with its own unique history, but this is a map of Liberia. America's Step-child.

A robust press and fledling court system bolstered by the belief of its people in the importance of education is showing signs of progress and hope. Most of the means of production, including its growing internet infrastructure are still foreign owned. Widespread rural poverty and ignorance purpetuated by isolation, continues to be a major challenge.

Liberia's resources are great for such a small nation. It has abundant rubber producing capacity and much underutilized areable land. Its timber and rainforests are under threat, but still can be managed and saved. It's pristine beaches could attract a large number of tourists, who would find ample respite swimming, diving and surfing in its warm water. They would be welcomed by a kind hearted people, who love and believe in America.

The Borto project is an attempt to assist the people of one small town in a rural underserved part of the nation. While less that 30 miles from Monrovia, Harrisburg is accessible only by foot six months out of the year. An orphanage started there six years ago, by Quita Bemah, a resident of Monrovia and student at United Methodist University has managed to keep its doors open. Food is often in short supply. The orphanage is staffed by volunteers from the community. The classrooms are taught by untrained educators who lack education themselves.
