In Her Own Words
May 19, 2012 - Hospital conditions at JFK: The room Daniel is in, we have six kids here. Daniel is the only one in his room with the other kids that is privilege, All the rest have very poor back ground and care, What I means is that, Daniel is bless that I am taking good care of him. The rest of his friends here in the same room with him don’t have the opportunity that Daniel has. These are all babies 1 year, 6 months, 2 years, very young. Some very sick even more than baby D. Among the six only Daniel will be leaving if we are finish with the bill.
Moses and his mother have been here since three weeks now, they are to go home, but there is no money to discharge them, Moses mother told me last night that his father ran away when her Moses was three days old. Poor children get treatment, but because no money the nurses are not paying much attention to them. They are all sick, like Daniel. They do not get the medicines that might help them. If they get well, they cannot leave until the bill is paid.
Everyone that are at the hospital, get food from home. The family must provide most the care, and bathing for the child. And some may get better on their own. This is how it is; Some of them even die. If other patient comes in those who have not paid, will be put on the floor. Or put on the general wall where they have the adults, and then less attention will be pay to them.
There is no place to find comfort in the room. No place to lie down to sleep. Only a wooden bench to sit down, no cushion. The doctors are good doctors. There are two for the four rooms of sick children. They are six in each room.
While Daniel is in the hospital I will stay all night here. I only go home in the morning to take my bath and change my clothes. I sleep right outside here under the palava hunt. A very big round house, with no door that can be close, no window, Just a open wide place where everyone sit and sees anyone that is coming from all directions. I have with me one comforter, And a pillow. I sleep on a table. The securities are all my friends. Only one person per patient is allowed to sleep here at the hospital. I always worry about the mosquitoes and the cold at night.
